This APOD is titled "M83 Star Streams" and it shows the spiral galaxy M83 in the constellation Hydra. This galaxy, which is twelve million light years away and forty thousand light years across, is known as the "Southern Pinwheel" for its pronounced spiral shape. It is also nicknamed the "Thousand Ruby Galaxy" due to the abundance of red-colored star forming regions within it. The deep view of this galaxy includes observations from Hubble along with ground based data from the European Southern Observatory's very large telescope units, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan's Subaru telescope, and Australian Astronomical Observatory photographic data by D. Malin. I chose this picture simply because I thought this galaxy was breathtaking, with its prominent spiral shape and the jewel-like star regions.
