APOD 3.7
I think this picture is breathtaking. It's called "Aurora over New Zealand" and there's just so much in this panorama of 11 different 20-second exposures. So the main attraction is definitely the pink aurora rising over the city, likely tinted this rosy hue due to excited oxygen atoms high in the atmosphere. The bright light emanating from the mountains on the left below the clouds is actually the rising moon. In the middle you can see a streak of seemingly sparkling dust, the band of the Milky Way. The fuzzy patch hovering in the top right is the Small Magellanic Cloud, which is one of the famous clouds observed by Ferdinand Magellan and his crew for navigation (hence the name). I love this picture-- one of my life goals is to see an aurora in person.
