APOD 3.6

This picture is titled "A Rainbow Pileus Cloud Over Zimbabwe". As much as I love stars, I thought it made a nice change to pick an image this week in which all the phenomena pictured occur inside of our own atmosphere. So here we have not a cloud with a silver lining, but with a rainbow one. Behind the dark cloud is a pileus iridescent cloud, with unusual rippling above it. The rainbow coloring is caused by water droplets that have a uniformly similar size, so they diffract different colors of sunlight by different amounts. This photo was captured in Zimbabwe, hence the title, near Odzi Valley and the Mtanda Range, just before sunset.
