"Mars near Opposition"
This picture shows a telescopic view of Mars, which has just reached opposition and is nearing its closest approach-- the dates are different because of the planet's elliptical orbit. Mars is clearly visible in the night sky to the naked eye as well, in the constellation Virgo. This picture is so cool because you can see white clouds forming in Mars's atmosphere, above its volcanos. It's hard to imagine that the little orangey-red star that I can see at night is actually this cloudy, volcanic planet. Hopefully we'll get a stargaze in soon so I can see this view through the telescope for myself. Astronomy is so cool. :)
